The astrological tradition that wants comets to bring exceptional events is very ancient and certainly the Christmas comet that marked the birth of Jesus is the most famous and also the most studied, since there is no concordance of interpretations even if Sergio Ghivarello provides a very suggestive one that places the birth of the Divine Child on October 5, 12 BC. when Halley’s Comet reached perihelion in one of its transits (see Theoretical Studies on the Basis of Astrological Thought, chap. XIV, p. 331)
The Christmas Star 2023, or Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, is a periodic comet of the Halley type that was first discovered by Jean-Louis Pons on July 12, 1812 and then rediscovered independently by William Robert Brooks in 1883. It returns to visit us every 71 years, the most recent passages were in 1812, 1884 and 1954. The spring of 2024 promises an unparalleled show as this exceptionally bright comet will become visible to the naked eye, even appearing in the daytime sky during the solar eclipse of 2024. Its distinctive feature, however, is its status as a cryovolcanic comet, a cosmic rarity that unleashes violent and unpredictable explosions. Its icy core releases gas and volatile materials into space, creating a “horn”-shaped coma, a characteristic for which it has been nicknamed the Devil’s Comet.

The position of the comet Pons-Brooks, on Christmas night 2023, was between the constellations of Lyra and Cygnus. Let’s now see how the Christmas star 2023 is oriented, with respect to an observer placed at the latitude of 45°N (Turin), using an azimuth graph that gives us the coordinates of the planets with respect to the plane of the geographic horizon of the place: shortly after rising, just visible above the horizon around 4:30, the comet Pons-Brooks is at an altitude of 1.5°N and at an azimuth of 32°E
On the graph the comet is in the sky of Turin near Pluto in a northeast direction, above the horizon line. Once we have identified the north with respect to the area of the house where we will build the nativity scene, the hut or cave must be located at about 30° to the right looking towards the north.

To the north we will make sure to build the most elevated part of the nativity scene with houses on the heights that will form the Northern Turtle, to the northeast we will place the hut with the Holy Family and the comet, to the south the propitious body of water of the Phoenix, to the west a part of the village.
